BARANGAY KIRAYAN SUR


Brief History

Barangay Kirayan Sur is two kilometers from the poblacion along the national road to Iloilo City.

It is the richest fishing ground of the municipality. Two well known coral sites, the so-called Central and Lo-ok. Abound with first class fishes like tangigue, mamsa and panit. And also marugbas and hipon which the natives turn into ginamos (shrimp paste), a native delicacy. Millions of bangus fingerlings are also caught in this place.

The sea along the barangay is called "Kirayan Deep." During the American liberation in 1945, ships unloaded their war cargoes in the place. Today, Philippine Navy ship then to load and unload equipments like bulldozers for road construction and other infrastructure projects.

Past heads were Cerido Molanida, Dioscoro Magalan, Nestor Natay, Zacarias Nuñal (1942-1947), Toribio Monsale (1948-1951), Cornelio Naculpa (1952-1953), Necomedes Faro (1956-1959), Jerimias Monsale (1960-1963) and Luis Napud (1964-1971). Barangay Captain Alejandro Molanida (1954-1955) and re-elected (1972-1979). Jerimias Monsale re-elected (1987-1994), Josefina Calantas (199401997) at present is PB Cezar Forece acting Punong Barangay from 1995-1997 and elected in 1997 to present.

During the Japanese occupation, the enemy killed in this place Felimon Genciana, Jose Fermiza and Felimon Naculpa.

This place has several successful professionals. Among whom are the Naoud brothers, Atty. Antonio Napud, Administrative Officer of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Region VI, Iloilo, Atty. Custodio Napud, legal officer of the BIR, Regional Office, Iloilo city, Engr. Luis Napud, Acting Provincial Engineer of the Province of Iloilo, Pablo Polido, chief Marine Engineer and wife Julieta Polido, a master of Arts in Education.

Barangay Kirayan Sur is a self-reliant community that is able to provide for its own basic needs, access the necessary resource for an ecological balance and equitable development and live in peace, justice and happiness. Barangay Kirayan Sur is committed to transform its people into self managing, just and peaceful constituents through livelihood enhancement, health care promotion, crime eradication and environmental conservation.

Objectives

  1. To conduct trainings/seminars on health and sanitation, illegal drugs, skill development and coastal reservation.
  2. To provide seed capital for a small and medium enterprises.
  3. To rehabilitate roads, foot walk and streetlights within the barangay.
  4. To sustain child advocacy program through day care services.

Strategies

  1. Mobilize barangay standing committees, NGO's in the programs and projects implementation.
  2. Solicit support from and participation of external agencies and the barangay residents.
