Barangay San Jose is 9 kilometers distance from the town of Miag-ao surrounded by mountains and situated beneath the river bank or valley barangay. Farming is the source of income of almost 1/2 of the families in the barangay.
San Jose is heretofore known as Muro Pangkug. There are two versions on how it derived its present name. First. claims that it was an attribution to a certain Father Jose of the Miag-ao town, who initiated lectures on Roman Catholicism in the area. The other version asserts that it was named in honor of St. Joseph who spared the inhabitants from frequent attacks of "Pulahan" rebels from Maasin, Iloilo. A popular story narrates that once, bandits attempted to rob the barangay. Their attempt, however, was quelled by a tall man clad in green vestments and holding a child and a tuff on both arms. The man was known to be as St. Joseph.
The first Cabesa de Barangay was Miguel Naman famously known as Cabesa Ige according to old people in San Jose. Many years has passed and many barangay leaders had come and go the longest Barangay Captain who served 20 years was Barangay Captain Rosendo Nofre during the time of diposed President Ferdinand Marcos. Yet we had been deprived by the government as far as economic development is concern we can reach the Miag-ao town through the only way is the 3 kilometer road along the river to Barangay Banbanan that cause difficulties to commercial transportation operators. It was only in the mid of 1994 that the circumferential of road at the center of the barangay was concreted.
